The evening

What an evening of calm looks like.

Not a craft to be good at. A quiet evening, or a few, and a city to show for it.

A different kind of evening.

Not the phone, not the TV. Your hands on the bamboo stick, your eyes on the gray lines.

No skill, nothing to decide.

The city is already there in gray. You follow it, and the color comes up.

Something to show for it.

A city in full color on black, 16 × 11.2 in. More than half plan to hang it.

Some finish a card in one evening, others take a few. There's no timer and no wrong pace.

Good to know

A few honest answers.

What people ask us before they order.

Will it arrive in time?

Every order ships tracked and arrives in 6-10 business days. Get the Christmas gifts done early. If it's for a date, order at least two weeks ahead.

Can I send it straight to them?

Yes. Put their address at checkout and it ships there, tracked. Every kit arrives ready to give, with our printed thank-you card in the parcel.

Does it light up? Do I need a lamp?

No. Nothing lights up and nothing plugs in. What looks like a glow in the photos is the color coming up against the black. An ordinary table lamp is all you need to see the lines.

Do I need to be artistic?

No. You're not drawing anything: every line of the city is already printed on the card in gray. You follow the lines with the bamboo stick and the color comes up. If you can trace a line, you can do this.

Didn't we do these at school?

Probably. Those cards were blank: you drew whatever you could. This one comes with the city already drawn in gray. Illustrators were doing this in the 1800s, for books and newspapers. It's called scratchboard.

How many cards should I get?

Start with one if you just want to try it. Many people pick two or three: three side by side is four feet of wall.At least two. Many people pick two or three: three side by side is four feet of wall.

Is it a good gift?

Six in ten people buy it as a gift. Pick the places that mean something to them, or simply ones they'd find beautiful. It arrives ready to give, and every parcel has our printed thank-you card inside.

When will it arrive?

Every order ships tracked and arrives in 6-10 business days. If it's for a date, order at least two weeks ahead.

How long does one card take?

It depends on the place and on you. Some people finish a card in one evening, others take a few. There's no timer and no wrong pace.

Are the lines very fine?

Some details are fine, especially in the busier cities. A good lamp helps, and you can take it slowly: there's no timer and no wrong pace.

Is it OK for kids or older hands?

Yes. There's no timer, so older hands can take it slowly. Younger kids should scratch with a grown-up nearby: the box says not for children under 3 (small parts).

Is $19.99 a lot for one card?

It's an evening, or a few. In the box: the city card, 16 × 11.2 in, a blank black card to draw your own, a bamboo stick, its envelope and instructions. Three cards side by side are four feet of wall, and shipping is free over $100.

Does it light up? Do I need a lamp?

No. Nothing lights up and nothing plugs in. What looks like a glow in the photos is the color coming up against the black. An ordinary table lamp is all you need to see the lines.

Is it messy?

A little fine dust comes off as you scratch. Nothing wet and nothing to wash: no paint, no brushes.

Is it OK for kids or older hands?

Yes. There's no timer, so older hands can take it slowly. Younger kids should scratch with a grown-up nearby: the box says not for children under 3 (small parts).

Very calming and centering after a difficult work day. Worth the money. Enjoyed immensely

I dunno. I took a chance, but I saw my cousins kids doing these and it looked fun. So I got my 71 year old mom 10 kits delivered to her winter snow bird retirement spot. She likes puzzles and paintings. I think this'll be a slam dunk when it gets smokin hot!

I love working on this Toronto skyline! I am halfway through and it is such a fulfilling activity!

Very calming. Didn’t have to worry about choosing different colors.

It is exactly what you think it is. Keeps you busy so your mind is focused on something. Put a towel down under everything to make clean up of shavings easier. There not a thick as lottery ticket shavings so it’s not that hard to gather them up and dispose of them. The bookmark sized ones are a little more challenging so do them after you have done a few large ones. The small one are also fun to share with someone else.

Nice change from paint by numbers! Cool the way the picture evolves as you work on it. It is taking a lot longer than the 90 minutes.......Which is a great thing!! More time to relax and enjoy.

I really like the items. I working on the New York City. It's taking my longer than 90 minutes because my eyesight isn't that great. I'm impressed with the colors. I may get more in the future.

My dear relative was told she needs stimulating activities for her health and she loved art projects. I sent three of your beautiful works to her and she LOVES them. Thank you!

I'm just starting the first one. Some, if not most, of the lines are too close together to use the stylus and get a sharp line. I realize this won't be an issue from a distance... I'm a little OCD. I hope I enjoy it when it's done. I think after the first I'll get better at the process. It's a great way to use my evening.

My daughter absolutely loved it. Thank you!

The nightly scroll always left me wired and restless. This is the opposite. Slow work on the Venice card under a low lamp and my brain finally quiets. No blue light. I fall asleep sooner and wake up feeling rested.

My last thing at night is this now, not the phone. A few quiet strokes of the Tokyo skyline and the day loosens. No glare, no feed. My thoughts settle and I drift off calmer. My sleep has genuinely improved since.

I keep it by the bed and do a slow bit of the Paris card each night. The room stays dim and my head clears. No blue light in my eyes. My mind winds down and I fall asleep gently. Such a calm ritual.

This is the quietest my mind gets all day. Ten minutes on the Sydney skyline under a soft lamp and everything slows. No screen, no scroll. My eyes rest and sleep follows softly. I did not think a card could help this much.

The slow reveal calms me right before bed. I sit with the Rome skyline for a while in low light and my thoughts settle. No blue glow, no buzzing. Sleep comes gently after. A tender way to end a long day.

It felt stiff for the first minute, then eased and became my nightly wind-down. A bit of the London card, lamp low, no phone, and I fall asleep easier. Just push a touch harder at the start and it clicks.

R

This got me off the late scroll for good. Slow work on the Barcelona card, room dim, no glare. My head slows and my eyes get heavy on their own. I fall asleep sooner and feel more rested in the morning.

M
Marlowe S.

My evenings feel softer now. I scratch a bit of the Paris skyline under a low lamp and the day quiets down. No screen, no feed. My mind winds down and I fall asleep gently. It has become my favorite part of the night.

S

The last thing at night used to be the feed. Now it is the Rome card and a warm lamp. My head empties and my eyes soften. Sleep arrives without the fight. It is such a calm way to close a day.

G
Grant H.

You can tell it is made to order, so the wait was real but fair. It is now my nightly off-switch from the phone and I fall asleep easier. Small caveat on the timing, otherwise the Tokyo card is a calm way to end the night.

C

I did not expect a card to help me sleep, but here we are. Ten minutes on the Venice skyline in low light and my mind lets go. No glow, no scrolling. I drift off calmer and rest deeper. Lovely little habit.

This settles me before bed like nothing else. A slow scratch of the New York skyline, light low, no phone. My thoughts stop looping and my eyes get heavy. I fall asleep gently and wake up clearer. A quiet win.

M
Marcus O.

I put the phone down earlier now because of this. Ten minutes on the Paris skyline, lamp low, room quiet. My mind slows and my body follows. No blue light keeping me up. I fall asleep far easier than before.

W
Wren S.

This is my gentle end to the day. I scratch a little of the Barcelona card in soft light and let the noise fade. No screen, no scroll. My eyes get heavy and sleep comes on its own. I keep this ritual close.

E
Everly K.

I traded my phone for this and my nights feel different. Ten quiet minutes on the Venice card in dim light and my head clears. My eyes rest instead of glowing. I fall asleep calmer and stay asleep longer.

B
Bonnie R.

The slow scratching sound is oddly soothing before bed. I work on the Sydney card for a while under a low lamp. My eyes are not strained by a phone, so they get heavy on their own. Sleep comes gently now.
